Mr Rugalema succeeds Mr Alinovi as FAO Representative in Kenya. Mr Rugalema, a national of Tanzania, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture (Crop Science) from the Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania, a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources Management and Sustainable Agriculture from the Agricultural University of Norway, and a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands. He started his career in 1989 working as a Researcher and Trainer in Agricultural Extension at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania. From 2001 to 2002, he was Senior Policy Adviser on HIV and Development for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS UNAIDS), Pretoria, South Africa. In 2003, he became Capacity Building Manager, HIV and Education, in the International Institute for Education Planning at UNESCO, Paris, France. He joined FAO in 2004 as Senior Officer, HIV and Food Security, Gender, in the Equity and Rural Employment Division, ESW, Rome, Italy. In 2009, he was first appointed Senior Officer and Acting Principal Advisor, and then Senior Officer and Strategy Team Leader, Gender, Equity and Rural Employment Division, ESW, Rome, Italy. He has been serving as FAO Representative in Sierra Leone since 2011. From October 2015 to April 2016, he also covered the function of United Nations Resident Coordinator ad interim in Sierra Leone. With the concurrence of the Government of the Republic of Kenya, Mr Gabriel Rugalema has been appointed FAO Representative in Kenya, effective 2 May 2016.
